My Cool Weather Favourites!

Friday, October 27, 2017

I am obsessed with watching favourites videos on YouTube. I'm always really interested in seeing what products the beauty gurus and lifestyle vloggers are using so that I can try them out for myself! I thought I could share some of the items I'm loving right now - as we're starting to move into cooler weather. My favourites are a mixture between clothing, beauty and home products!

Vest // Quilted vests are perfect for cooler weather. Some days are simply not cold enough for a full coat, so a thick sweater with a vest on top is a great option. A vest is definitely a staple in any Fall and early Winter wardrobe.

Hair mask // I have very curly hair and it tends to dry out as soon as it gets cold. In order to retain some moisture, I like to use a hair mask once a week. I like this one because the formula is thick and doesn't leave a mess. I've also noticed a huge difference in the shine and bounce of my curls!

Socks // I don't think it's possible to get through cool weather without cozy socks. I don't like to use too much heat indoors because it dries out my hair, skin and nails - plus it's just uncomfortable. Wearing socks inside of the house keeps me warm and comfortable and it doesn't hurt that they are so cute!

Boots // A staple. I really couldn't survive late Fall/early Winter without my boots. I did a whole post on them here!

Candle // There is nothing better than lighting a lovely candle after a long day. I have a huge collection of candles as I can't seem to control myself when I come across a good candle. Right now, I've been burning a lot of pumpkin scents - but my Winter and Christmas scent collection is growing!

Scrub // This sea salt scrub is great for getting rid of dry skin. You can use it in the shower or before you hop in the shower if your skin is extra dry like mine. I can't believe how smooth my skin feels after I use the scrub and it smells sooo good!

Coat // This light coat is great for rainy days or days where a vest won't cut it. It is lined, so there is an element of warmth - but the shell is not heavy like a winter coat.

Scarf // I love scarves! I have so many that I rotate in and out depending on my outfit and mood. This window pane pattern is so classic and would work with just about anything!

Pants // Elastic hem pants are perfect for a short person like me, plus this pair is super comfortable! I wear them around the house and they fit like a dream!

Hand cream // Between frequent washing, cold weather, and indoor heating my hands are always the driest part of my body. This hand cream is super light and the scent is refreshing rather than overly fragrant!

Lip balm // My holy grail product. Since I was introduced to this product, I have never used anything else for my lips. It's perfectly light, not at all sticky and the scent is so fresh. My lips absolutely love this stuff! I highly recommend!

What are your favourites right now?

An Easy Fall Look

Wednesday, October 25, 2017

Fall weather has finally settled in and I am not complaining! I'm really happy to be out of the in-between days where it's cold in the morning and scorching by the afternoon. The constant, crisper air makes it a lot easier to get dressed for the day!

It's not quite cool enough for a jacket, so I have been improvising by wearing my favourite quilted vest over my outfits. I love how lightweight it is while still adding a layer of warmth. My green top is pretty thin, so the extra layer is appreciated. I still have my white jeans on because I love them and I'm not ready to put them away for the season! They look great with dark green and black on top and I'm not sure when (if) I'll retire them!

This look is perfect for a casual day out. I wore it to brunch and kept it on to run errands! I have a sneaking suspicion this may become my Fall uniform.

LL Bean Boots!

Wednesday, October 18, 2017

I posted a few photos of my LL Bean boots over on Instagram (follow me here) and surprisingly received a handful of questions about them. I've had my Bean boots for about five winters now and I cannot stress enough how great they are. I have an abnormally sized foot for my height (I'm 5'2 and wear a size 12 wide women's shoe) which makes it near impossible to find shoes.

I remember growing up and dreading winter boot shopping because it was so difficult. I would almost always end up having to buy a men's utility boot while everyone else had really cute ones! What I would give to know about LL Bean back then! I'm way happier now because I've found a stylish, well fitting and most importantly warm pair of boots that have lasted me through 5 Canadian winters and are in perfect condition for 5 more.

Because I don't have an LL Bean store nearby (most of us don't) I had to purchase my shoes online, which was surprisingly tricky! There are quite a few options on the website - so today I'm going to break it down for you!

1. Height
Decide on the height of your boot. Like I mentioned, I am short - but the snow here can get quite high. I decided to go with the 6" boot for myself. It hits me above the ankle and once tied, no snow gets in. If you are on the taller side or experience a lot of snow it may make more sense to purchase a taller boot.

2. Style
There are so many different styles of the Bean boot now, compared to when I purchased mine. I love the classic brown, but the Navy and Maple boot options are nice as well. There are also different options when it comes to the lining. You can opt for Thinsulate, shearling or flannel lined boots. I have the Thinsulate lined boots and I find them to be perfect for Winter! If you're unsure about lining options, I would recommend going for an unlined boot and adjusting your sock choice to the weather.

3. Sizing
This is the trickiest part. Because I have a large foot, I have convinced myself that I always wear the largest size no matter the company. If you can relate to that - I have some advice for you. Listen to the sizing advice on the website! The boots do run large and wide. Unless you always plan to wear very heavyweight, thick socks with the boots - you need to size down a whole size. If you are a half size, you should still size down to the nearest whole size (so shoe size: 11 LL Bean size:10. Shoe size 11 1/2 LL bean size 10). I made the mistake of ignoring the size guide the first time ordering and it was a whole production to get the right size in. Follow the size guide!!!!

PS: Bean boots almost always become back-ordered, so shop now!

On Changing Direction

Monday, October 16, 2017

I vividly remember my high school self and how obsessed I was with planning my life. Around graduation, I came up with intense five yand ten-year plans. Get a Bachelor's degree, find the perfect job, get married, etc. Now,  at the five-year mark, I'm fully aware that a lot of the things I had planned for myself likely aren't happening now. Instead, I'm still coping with my parent's divorce, figuring out what exactly I want to do with my degree and generally just lost.

I know it's not realistic or healthy to constantly wonder about how my life could have been if certain things did or did not happen. Certain things are simply out of my control and I have to live with that. But, I have learned in the past few years that there are many more things that are within my control and I can decide how I handle life's disappointments. So what do you do when things don't go to plan? Change course, of course!

Each second we have is an opportunity to reinvent the wheel, make a change, start something new. You don't have to operate within other people's constraints - especially if they are hurting you in any way. You can reclaim your time and start over again if you need to. You are the master of your own fate and ultimately in control of your own timeline.

Even the most rigid of plans can be changed as we change and grow. Sometimes things don't always work out as we plan, and that's okay. Life has several paths and we are explorers. Though the journey may not always be easy, whenever we reach our intended destination - we'll look back and know it was worth it.

Herringbone Fleece Sweater

Wednesday, October 11, 2017

It feels so great to be back! I had to take a week off for my mental health and it was definitely the right decision. I feel refreshed and not burdened by my never-ending to-do list. Though I wasn't posting to the blog, I was still around on Instagram and Twitter. I'm trying to get more into both Instagram and Twitter and I'd love if you would follow me on those channels.

Now to the outfit. Navy and white is a pretty basic colour combination - but I simply love how they look together. I am still wearing white jeans because Mother Nature hasn't quite clued into the fact that it's Fall. I found the herringbone sweater at Winners and didn't question whether or not I'd be buying it. It fits so wonderfully and the herringbone pattern is so classic. A navy top and my trusty white jeans round out the outfit and whenever it gets cooler, I can switch them out for blue jeans and boots!
