Currently Reading: The Hate U Give

Friday, June 23, 2017

I'm super excited about today's Currently Reading post because the novel I am featuring has received a lot of praise and recognition. Though technically a young adult novel, I do think the themes are appropriate for older audiences as well. When I was paying for this book (and some others) the bookstore cashiers all gathered around and told me how much they loved the story and admittedly, I was skeptical. I've bought books at the advice of bookstore staff before and didn't really like them - but I'm so glad I read this one!

From the cover:
"The novel follows protagonist Starr Carter, a 16-year-old black high school student who witnesses a white police officer shooting her unarmed best friend Khalil. Starr Carter moves between her two worlds: the poor black neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school that she and her brothers attend. The balance of these two worlds collapse when she sees her childhood friend die at the hands of a cop. Khalil, Starr's best friend was unarmed. Everyone wants to know what took place that night and the only person who can answer that is Starr. But the problem is that what Starr says might endanger her life and her home."

The Hate U Give is definitely not a quick or easy read, but it is a great story and I highly recommend it!
