Micklyn Art Prints

I love art - specifically bright pieces of art. I think investing in art pieces is a great idea for people of any age. I find a lot of great art on Pinterest, and spend time digging around the internet finding the source. I saw the first print below while on a pinning binge and fell in love. I instantly made it my phone background, and decided that I needed to see more from this artist. After a few minutes of research, I found that the artist is Micklyn and she makes really cool art!

Weekend Links

Do you ever have weeks where everything seems like a struggle? That was definitely me this week. This week has definitely been a roller coaster. Many ups and many downs. I'm glad it's Friday because I really just want to skip on over to next week!

Here are your weekend links:

Serena Willams - 7/11
I love Serena Williams. She is definitely one of my tennis idols. I feel like she is usually super serious, so it's nice to see her let loose and have fun in this video!

Why Being Hangry Sucks
I can relate so well to this article. When I'm hangry (hungry and angry) it's best that you stay out of my way. Now I finally understand why I get so agitated

Stages of Unrequited Love
This is my life now and it's completely awful

Maroon 5 - Sugar
I'm super late to the party, but I LOVE this song and the music video. It's really, really cute and I've managed to learn the lyrics in just one day!

Have a great weekend!

Lilly For Target!

A little while ago, Target contacted me and asked me to help spread the word about the Lilly for Target collaboration! Naturally, I was super excited because Lilly Pulitzer is really not a huge deal in Canada. There is one signature store close to my hometown and that's about it; until you cross the border. Luckily for me, I currently live super close to a border crossing - which means I will be able to get my fill of the collection! Hooray!

Anyway, the lookbook is out and can I just say that it's beyond perfect? I wasn't sure what to expect from the collaboration, but now that I've seen everything, I can say that it's amazing! The prints are what you would expect from Lilly Pulitzer and the price points are what you would expect from Target. I think if Lilly Pulitzer is hard for you to access where you live, this collaboration gives you just what you need!

I definitely recommend checking out the lookbook. The dresses are beautiful, and the home goods are flawless. I'm also super impressed that there are plus sized options, since Lilly Pultizer can run small sometimes! I can't wait for the line to be released on April 16th. Until then, you can browse the full collection online and save your favourite items for later! I hope my wallet is ready!

Tori Praver Seafoam

Currently, there is a freezing rain warning for where I live. It's hard to believe that it's Spring, and even harder to believe that warm weather will be here soon. I know I just went to Jamaica, but I could definitely use another tropical vacation.

I dream of cute swimwear and places to wear I can lay out in the sun all day. The Tori Praver swimwear line for Target is really cute. Tori Praver is a model turned swimwear designer. She has a great eye and produces beautiful swimwear. There are tons of pieces that you can mix and match to create your perfect swimsuit. There are also super chic one pieces in the collection, which are sure to make a splash! My personal favourites are the the tie-back one pieces and floral two pieces!

Florals for Spring....Groundbreaking.

I love flowers, specifically gardens. Cut flowers are a thoughtful gift and are nice to brighten up a living space, but gardens are so beautiful and calming! I could spend an entire day gardening or walking through a garden, if my allergies would let me. I definitely have a green thumb. Since I can't spend my days laying in a bed of flowers, I'll have to opt for floral clothing!

Some may think that floral clothing is dated and ages you, but there are some really beautiful and contemporary options out there!

How do you wear florals?

Spring Skincare and Makeup

For some reason, my skin is very quick to adapt to a change in season. Thankfully, we are starting to get into warm weather, so the dryness is going away and my face isn't always in pain. Because of this, I have to cut back on the super thick moisturizers, gels and cremes; as not to clog my pores.

The end of Winter also means I can play around with makeup again. Typically in the Winter, my skin is so dry that makeup just sits on my face and looks horrible. Now, I can put on some blush and have it look natural or wear eye makeup and not have to worry about tears washing everything away!

These are the products that I'm currently using, and I love them!

What are your spring beauty favourites?

Hey It's Okay - Sick Edition

I'm messing up the natural order of things on the blog for a 'special' post. If you follow me on Twitter, then you may know that I have been very, very sick for the past few days. I am feeling much better today, and decided that a blog post was in order - after days of neglect.

I've noticed that when I'm sick (which is a very rare occurrence) that all sense and order go out the window. I always start off super optimistic about getting well soon, but as the reality sets in so does my misery. Currently, I feel tired, I'm behind on important work and my apartment is a nightmare. I would do ANYTHING to feel better. I'm sure some of you can relate!

1. To pretend that everything is fine and that you are not sick (despite having all symptoms)
2. To explain to everyone that you feel fine, after receiving many disapproving looks
3. To excuse yourself from a meeting, so you can cough without judgement
4. To return from your cough and have everyone tell you to go home5. To convince yourself that you'll feel 100% better tomorrow, despite what the doctor said
6. To go on a diet of oranges, orange juice, lemon tea and cough drops
7. To convince yourself that having a sore throat and dry cough is what dying must feel like
8. To cry when you run out of oranges, orange juice, lemon tea and cough drops
9. To whine about every minor inconvenience
10. To sleep for 20 hours, and feel perfect fine sleeping for 20 more

I hope you aren't sick today, but if you are - know that we are in this together!

You're Stronger Than You Think

The other day I was walking home with a really heavy bag of groceries, when I had a small revelation of sorts. Typically, if I decide to walk home with groceries; it is such a struggle. I usually have to switch carrying arms or just stop all together for a break. This time however, I walked all the way home without a struggle. No sore arms, no sore back and no need for a break.

"We either make ourselves miserable or we make ourselves strong. The amount of work is the same." — Carlos Castenada ∞

When I first started doing yoga, I did not think that a bunch of crazy poses would make me stronger. I assumed I would be focusing on breathing and relaxation; not a faced-paced rigorous series that really makes you sweat (video for reference). For the first few weeks, I didn't notice a difference. I would struggle through the poses, feel absolutely beat up at the end of class and sore for days. These days I notice myself getting into the poses easier, but struggle with going deeper into a pose, out of fear that I'm not strong enough and will fall.

The point I'm trying to make is that you are stronger than you think, and a lot of that strength is in your mind. Once I realized that I could successfully carry a large bag of groceries home with no issue, I promised myself to try and go a little further in my yoga classes. Our mind can be our best friend or worst enemy. We can choose to remain the same out of fear, or to push ourselves (even a little bit) and be surprised. Going a little bit further each time we do something, can really make a difference. You'd be surprised at how much you can actually do, or how far you can go if you just free your mind and try! I know it's not always that simple and that some days are harder than others, but as long as you make a genuine effort to silence that doubt and fear, you will find strength.

Weekend Links

It's still the weekend, which means it's not too late to get this post up! These past few weeks have been trying and sadly my blog has suffered because of it....
I'm hoping that things will calm down soon, so that I can spend more time producing great content, but until then, here are you weekend links!

Banish breakouts for good with these tips and tricks. #jewelexi #skincare #skincaretips

Skin Mistakes You Are Making
This post is great because a lot of us are doing these things without thinking twice. For example, who knew exfoliating too much could cause breakouts? Or that plucking facial hair is a no-no? I definitely feel more enlightened after this article, and will make more of an effort to treat my skin better.

Shop Dodie Thayer for Tory Burch

I love this collaboration! The pieces remind have me longing for summer for a garden parties. I love that each piece is handcrafted and painted. Details are very important to me, so knowing that each piece gets special attention is really nice!

Pi Day!
I love Pi Day because everyone un-apologetically releases their inner science/math lover AND because it's the perfect excuse to indulge in some pie. This year's pi day is extra special because it's 3/14/15 - which sequentially are the first 5 digits of pi. Also, at 9:26:53 AM we would have had the first 10 numbers of pi in sequential order!! Pretty cool if you ask me!

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Can we please talk about the genius that is Tina Fey? She penned this Netflix original and it is beyond hilarious. I'm talking crying laughter here. The premise is that Kimmy was kidnapped and kept underground for 14 years; while made to believe that the world had ended. The show begins with Kimmy's rescue and her moving to New York. The rest of the show is hilarious but a little dark. The theme song is also really catchy! I managed to finish watching it in a weekend!

Have a great weekend!

Style At Every Age

J. Crew recently came out with their Spring collection, and I love how they've used the items to create different age appropriate looks. It just goes to show that it's not necessarily what you wear that matters, but rather how you wear it. Truthfully, there are outfits in the 30, 40 and 50+ categories that I would definitely wear! I think a lot of people my age struggle with age appropriate dressing, and drift toward ill-fitting or trendy items as not to 'age' themselves.

I think the most important thing to realize is that if you invest in quality clothing, it can last you a lifetime. All you have to change is the way you style yourself. I have many items in my closet that I've had since high school, and they continue to have a place in my closet because they are classics! I just love that a well known brand such as J. Crew is exploring this and proving that you can look great at any age!

Spring Wishlist

The clocks have sprung forward, the temperature is rising, and Spring is definitely on it's way. I cannot wait to ditch my Winter boots for some cute flats, and my jeans for dresses!
I really need to purge my closet and add some fresh items to my wardrobe. Whenever there is a change in season, I like to go through my clothes and either donate or toss things that don't quite work anymore. When that's all done, I go out and pick out some new items that are appropriate for the season!

I made a wishlist of things that I'd love to have in time for Spring.

Essie Spring 2015

Love nail polish! With all of the colours available, it's so easy to change your look! I always feel that I am a season behind with Essie nail polish. I just finished collecting all of the Winter colours, and now Spring is out! I love the Essie formula. Most colours only need two coats, and paired with a base and top coat will last for up to 5 days!

I think the colours this season are pretty great. Not too bright or flashy, and perfect for Spring weather! I like the neutral colours for a manicure and the fun bright colours for a pedicure. You can scroll through all of the colours using the widget below:

Weekend Links

It's the weekend!
I'm glad I made it through the week, because there was a lot going on and I wasn't sure how to manage it all. The semester is picking up and winding down at the same time and it feels very strange. I'm looking forward to relaxing and getting some reading in this weekend!

Here are your weekend links:

I thought this article was really interesting for a number of reasons. 1) Delta Zeta's philanthropy is speech and hearing, so naturally I am drawn to such things. 2) This is a really great example of how language changes over time. People who use ASL have literally made up signs representing slang words, ensuring that language evolves and stays relevant! To me that is very interesting.

The text on the blackboard in the candy cane scene is a Shakespeare quote referencing three QUEENS.

This article picks up on the tiniest of details in Mean Girls. I would really love to know how closely the author was watching the movie to notice these things, because they are very obscure!

Weird Things Women Keep In Their Purses
As I watch this video, I am going through my purse and finding the most random items. I think that you can learn a lot about a woman by going through her purse. This hilarious video proves that.

Act now to get some great deals on Shopbop! You can save up to 25% on brands like Kate Spade, Tory Burch and Shoshanna! This is perfect timing to get some new items for your Spring wardrobe!

#DearMe

I saw a number of my favourite YouTubers participate in this #DearMe campaign, and I really wanted to do the same. I was unable to film a video, so instead I am going to write here. I am going to caution you that this may be the most personal post on my blog and I am very scared to post this. But I need to. This letter is going to be to my high school self. I've been out of high school for years now, but for some strange reason there are some scars that still haven't healed (metaphorically...not physically).

So here it goes:

A photo of me at my sweet sixteen. Obviously, I am very concerned about something.

#DearMe,

Stop relying on others to validate you.
You are a strong, smart and beautiful person all on your own. You don't need to wake up at 5 am to straighten those beautiful curls. You don't need to force small pieces of plastic into your eyes (they won't work anyway, because your vision is just that bad). You don't need cosmetic surgery to fix something that is a problem for someone else. Bullying is not 'just a thing kids have to go through' and you need to speak to someone. Seriously, speak to someone - stop pretending you are okay. I also want you to know that you are not ungrateful for feeling depressed. It's a flaw in your brain chemistry, not your character. If you have to hide your pain from your 'friends', then they are not your friends. True friends will celebrate your successes with you, and mourn the losses with you. When those people enter your life, you will know - trust me. If you want to wear black eyeliner and listen to punk rock - do it! Who cares if you are too 'white-washed', do what makes you happy. Dear me, please don't dumb yourself down or neglect your interests and opinions for a boy. Please don't. It's okay to be smart, to like what you like and to not agree with everything that comes out of his mouth. Trust me, you will find someone who loves all of your quirks and who values you, just the way you are. Dear me, you don't have to hang out with people you don't like just to feel accepted. You also don't have to throw a huge party for these people to like you, you're going to feel alone in that room anyway. The truth is, no matter how many eggshells you walk on - someone will still dislike you. That's just the nature of people. Let the spark for your inner flame come from within, and you will never feel alone again.
Never forget that time is fleeting and change is the only constant. It all may feel like the end of the world now, but it won't feel that way forever. Be resilient and learn from the hard times. Use these times to build character, not a wall. Dear me, you are going to survive and grow and life is going to be great.

Parima Studio

I was browsing Pinterest for some inspiration, when I came across a really cool print. After a few minutes of Google reverse image search, I was lead to the Parima Studio website. Patricia Vargas is a very talented painter and the owner of Parima Studio. Her work is colourful, modern and fun. Each print is bold enough to be a statement piece in a room. I hope that I will be able to invest in some of these beautiful art pieces in the near future, but until that day comes - I'll just have to browse the Parima Studio website in awe!

You can browse more Parima Studio prints here. If you sign up for her newsletter, you will receive a free desktop calendar or phone background designed by Patricia! Who wouldn't want to dress up their tech with some fine art!

Preppy Scientist Playlist (No. 19)

I've been in a pretty weird mood lately, and typically when this happens I like to make a playlist to try and cheer myself up. I've been listening to a very interesting mix of music, which I thought I should share. Whether you are in a funk or just want to explore some new sounds, this playlist is quite nice! I would describe it as angsty, soothing and laid-back. I hope you enjoy it!

You can listen to this playlist on Spotify
