STEM Spotlight: Michelle

I'm continuing on with my Women in STEM feature with another interview! Today I'm speaking with Michelle - a math major, fellow Delta Zeta sister and great friend! Michelle is also a great student who not only excels in her studies, but campus involvement as well!

Name: Michelle Caruso
Age: 19
Field of STEM: Mathematics and Statistics

 Describe yourself in three words?
Outgoing, hard-working, friendly.

What sparked your interest in your field?
I've always excelled in mathematics so naturally I started being interested in it.

What would your dream job be?
An actuary; which is "a person who compiles and analyzes statistics and uses them to calculate insurance risks and premiums." They apply extremely difficult mathematical and statistical theorems to their work and are one of the best jobs in Canada.

What are the best and worst parts about being a woman in STEM?
Being in a male-dominated field, it is difficult to stand your ground but once you do you gain the respect of everyone. You are looked highly upon being a woman in a male-dominated field by those not in the field as well.

Who are your biggest supporters?
Definitely my parents and professors. Being in a small field everyone wants to see you succeed. Also, anyone who knows what field I am in are my supporters; when they know the difficulty of mathematics and statistics it is really supporting knowing that they believe in me and my skills.

What advice would you give to girls who are intimidated to pursue a career in STEM?
Don't be intimidated. Men and women are created as equal and anything they can do we can do! Believe in yourself and know you can do anything in the world.

When will you know that you've made it?
When I land my dream job and start my life after my education has finished.

Thanks Michelle!
