Alone Not Lonely

Monday, January 26, 2015

I have always been relatively shy and I definitely do not thrive in large groups. I also really value the time I spend alone and sometimes wish I had more of it. I also live by myself. For these reasons, people tend to think that I am 'lonely' - which is not the case. I choose to spend a large portion of time alone - it's not something forced on me.

I have a small group of friends who I love to spend my time with! I sometimes even joke with my best friend that we should find ways to spend all of our time together. I do get bouts of loneliness when something exciting is happening at home and I'm stuck at school - but that's natural. The bottom line is - I choose to spend a lot of my time alone because it makes me happy.

Over the weekend I went to a pretty nice restaurant by myself and despite receiving some disapproving looks, it was great! I was able to order whatever I wanted, take as long as I needed and sort through the ever playing dialogue in my mind.

This is why I think spending time alone is so important. I've noticed that people feel like being around others or being connected is necessary to not missing out on anything. Spending time with friends and online is great - but it can get overwhelming. It's easy to lose yourself when you constantly have information being thrown at you. This is why alone time is something I really value. It gives me the chance to discover more about myself in a pretty simple and fun way.

Trust me when I say that it's okay to spend time alone. Whatever you 'miss out on' isn't half as important as self-care and self-awareness are.

Do you spend a lot of time alone?

Never miss a post!

  1. I think this is so important. Today's society completely emphasizes and puts priority on always going going going but it's so important to take time now and then to be still and relax by yourself. Great post! ;)

  2. Couldn't have said it better myself

  3. I love this! I'm the same way -- I genuinely enjoy being alone, and need me-time to rest and recharge. I used to feel weird about not really wanting to go out and party, but I'm at the point where I've embraced my selective sociability. ;) haha.

  4. Love this! This reminds me of the Audrey Hepburn quote "I don't want to be alone, I just want to be left alone". As an introvert, it's important for me to have some time to re-fuel and get my thoughts together. I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one! Great post!
