Back to School: Organize All Year Long!

Thursday, August 28, 2014

I think it's pretty easy for anyone to organize their life and belongings, however staying organized is the real challenge. I am definitely guilty of letting things pile up on the floor, counter, kitchen table and couch at my house - especially during the school year. I often use the excuse that 'I'm busy with school work' to justify the disarray!

I've come up with a mini guide that breaks up different tasks for optimal organization. Rather than trying to tackle everything all at once and becoming overwhelmed - break the tasks up into daily, weekly and monthly occurrences. This will definitely lighten the load and keep you sane during the school year!
How do you stay organized?

Reblog: New Semester Tips!

Wednesday, August 27, 2014

This is a post that was originally posted on January 3rd of this year but is definitely helpful and relevant for back to school!

It's a new semester for me, which means it's time to get reorganized. I find that towards the end of each semester things get super hectic and downright messy. I think it's super important to start of each semester with a clean slate, and that means organized!

I have a system that I use to get organized at the start of a new semester, and today I'm going to share it with you! These tips have worked for me since I started university!

1. Organize and archive old notes.
If you use your computer for notes like I do, now is the time to move them from your computer to an external hard drive or USB drive! I make a folder for each semester and store the notes there. If you use paper notes, organize them into a labeled binder and store them away.

2. Create new folders for each subject.
Pretty self explanatory. I like to keep my folders on the desktop for easy access to the files I need!

3. Read Syllabi and write down key dates.
Most professors will upload the syllabus before the first class. That is the time to print off a copy for yourself and to write down all of the important dates into your planner. This will ensure that you are aware of  deadlines and test dates well in advance, and that you are prepared for them. As a former TA I noticed that a lot of students would ask questions about things that were outlined in the syllabus (huge pet peeve), so reading it thoroughly will put you ahead of the game.

4. Make a hard copy of your timetable
I love having a copy of my timetable on the wall. It makes it easy for me to budget my time each day and schedule in any meetings that I may have. You could print your timetable from your school software or write it out on some cute stationery (like me)!

Lastly, treat yourself because you are now ahead of game this semester!

Back to School: Quick List

In my first year of school I relied on the huge Target list to decide on what to bring with me. I noticed that each year I needed less and soon the Target list no longer applied to me. This year I know that I will not need many things, other than the few odds and ends that need replacing! I put together a 'quick list' of items that I will need to stock up on before the school year starts!

Do you follow a 'quick' list or a more detailed one?

Back to School: Get More Out of Your Mornings

Tuesday, August 26, 2014

I would definitely classify myself as a morning person. I typically wake up around 6 AM (7 if I don't set an alarm) and usually feel pretty refreshed. I usually start class between 9 and 11 - so always have about three hours to kill in the morning. I like to use this time to be productive because after a long day, I long for my bed. Whether you're a morning person or not - here are a few ways that you can get more out of your mornings!

Image via: Harry Crowder

1. Plan the night before
A lot of people I know do not do this and I can't understand why. Rushing seriously cramps my style and I always end up forgetting something. Planning the night before is a great way to get a few more minutes in the morning to yourself. Just think, if you pick out your outfit, have your lunch ready and bag packed - you can save 20 minutes in the morning and not have to rush. I always pick out my clothes and have everything I will need for the next day prepared, before I go to bed. It works!

2. Ditch the devices
Many of us have a really bad habit of hopping onto social media right as we wake up. It can be overwhelming to our minds to take in so much information right as we wake up! Instead, take that time to write out some goals and intentions you would like to guide your day. This will give you a direction and concrete purpose for each day, and the satisfaction of fulfilling your daily goals and intentions will help you sleep better at night!

3. Get moving!
I have this great little 20 minute exercise ball workout that I try to do every morning. You don't have to run 5K - but a brisk walk, some quick yoga or even some jumping jacks will energize your body and get those endorphins going for the rest of the day!

4. Plan an activity that you love for the morning
Every morning I really look forward to reading a few chapters of the book I'm reading at the time - so I always make sure to have my book ready for the morning commute. Some people look forward to walking their dogs, cooking a hearty breakfast or speaking to a loved one on the phone. Whatever the activity you love may be (save for checking social media) try to plan it so that you do it every morning. This will give you something to look forward to in the morning and therefore make waking up easier!

These are my tips and I hope they help you this back to school season!

Back to School: Backpacks and Totes

Monday, August 25, 2014

Welcome to the back to school series on the blog! I'll be covering a variety of topics this week to get you prepared for Fall!

One of my favourite things to shop for during back to school season is a backpack/tote. Last year I pledged to use a backpack and I really liked it! My neck and shoulder did not hurt as much as when I used a tote and I could fully use both of my hands! I still love a good tote - I just try to limit their use to days when I don't have much to carry or a long day!

I've gathered variety of backpacks and totes that will be perfect for back to school. There are different styles and I tried to cover many different price points to appeal to everyone!

Do you carry a backpack or a tote? Which do you prefer?

One Direction Concert + Makeup Recap

Sunday, August 24, 2014

I've been waiting to write this post for what feels like a super long time! I had the amazing opportunity a couple of weeks ago to attend the One Direction concert in Toronto. I received the e-mail the night before letting me know that I would be going and though it was super last minute - I was really excited! I am a huge One Direction fan. At one point I would use 1D notebooks to take my class notes...in university (no shame).

I asked a friend from school to join me, and we met downtown about an hour before the concert. There were so many fans lined up down the streets of Toronto! It was a crazy scene. The concert was at the Rogers Centre - which I'm unfamiliar with so it took us a while to realize that we had FLOOR SEATS!!! When we realized what section we would be sitting in - we both freaked out!

5 Seconds of Summer opened for One Direction and they were a really great band! I loved their song "She Looks So Perfect" before the concert, so it was great to hear that and a few new to me songs by them! Finally One Direction went on - and the rest is history. They sang all of my favourite songs and I had a blast singing along!

In addition to the concert - I received some awesome samples of One Direction's new makeup line! I really loved everything I received - but my favourite item would have to be the "Midnight Memories" kit! The kit includes and eyeshadow palette, eyeliner, lipstick, lipgloss, mascara and a nail varnish!

What I love are the instructions included in the packaging to create three different makeup looks! I tried out the first look which was really fun!

I'm really glad that I had this opportunity - it was definitely a highlight of my summer!

Beauty Obsession: Glittered Nails

Wednesday, August 20, 2014

I spend a lot of time on Pinterest where I am constantly exposed to the newest trends. I don't usually wear nail art - mostly because it gets ruined quickly - but I think that a glittered statement nail is really fun! I love that this look is pretty easy to accomplish at home, which means you can skip the nail salon and save a few dollars!

An easy trend to try is the single statement nail. Paint one nail on each hand one color, then paint the rest with a different shade.

Recipe: Chocolate Banana Bread

Tuesday, August 19, 2014

I love banana bread! It's an easy treat to make and a perfect way to use up those brown bananas you have laying around (it's okay...we all have some). This chocolate banana bread recipe is super rich and sure to satisfy any sweet tooth!

Delightful Nourishment: Banana Bread With Chocolate Chips
Image via: Fare Recipes

3-4 medium very ripe bananas (I sometimes use up to 5)
1/2 cup butter, melted3/4 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
2 large eggs

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 1/4 cup sugar
1 cup milk chocolate chunks or chips

Preheat your oven to 350°F. Butter a 9×5-inch loaf pan, or spray it with a nonstick baking spray.
Mash bananas in the bottom of a large bowl. Add in the melted butter, brown sugar, egg, and lastly vanilla. Add baking soda, salt, sugar and flour. Stir dry and wet ingredients with a spoon until combined. Stir in chocolate chunks or chips. Pour into the pan and bake 55 to 65 minutes - checking often - or until a tester or toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out batter-free. Cool in pan for 10 to 15 minutes. Remove from pan and serve warm or at room temperature.

A Mish Mash of Thoughts

Wednesday, August 13, 2014

Hey everyone! With all of the talk going on about mental health and like topics going on right now - I thought I'd use today's post as an outlet. Firstly, I'm not quitting blogging or anything! I love it too much. That being said, sometimes I go through periods where I have zero inspiration or motivation. You can imagine how difficult this can be when I've committed myself to writing 5 posts a week! This only happens about 5% of the time and I can usually get it together.

Other times I'm so overwhelmed by my schedule that I don't even know where to begin. Between school, work and other commitments - it's definitely not easy to make sure every area of my life is at high performance. This can be incredibly draining and terrible for my mental health (which is already fairly fragile....maybe one day I'll talk about it). I'm still learning how to live a full and balanced life. I think I will constantly have to be learning because things are always changing. I'm currently reading a really great book on how to do all of that (which I will review once I have finished it) and so far it's a fantastic resource.

In short, just know that I value this blog and it's readers. I'll always try to have the best possible posts for you to read everyday, but sometimes that may not be the case - and I hope you can understand. I feel very blessed to have this forum and people who choose to listen! I also want you to take away that sometimes life can be hard - and that's okay. Allow yourself to feel and to heal. Ask for help and remember that above all else you are human.

Weekend Links

Friday, August 8, 2014

I always get confused during short weeks and forget which day it is. This week was no exception. I had the week off of work which was nice, but I also had a lot of things to catch up on. This weekend I will continue to catch up and take photos of all of my clothing for an upcoming project/blog post!

Here are your links for the road!
Mint Desk Accessories // Poppin
I'm a huge fan of Poppin! They have fun and colourful desk accessories that are sure to liven up any desk! They just released a mint collection and I'm in love!

A product image shows the new Research Institute playset from Lego, which features women in roles as three scientists. In January, the company was criticized by a girl who said all its female characters were "boring."

I'm so excited about this! Lego will be releasing a set called 'Research Institute' which will feature women! I'm all for having more women in STEM so showing children (especially young girls) that science is cool and fun is definitely great!

Lion King Cast Takes Over NYC Subway
This is SO cool! I don't think I've ever met a person who doesn't love The Lion King. To celebrate one billion dollars of revenue, the cast of The Lion King took to an NYC subway to perform 'Circle of Life'. This video left me really wanting to see The Lion King on Broadway!!

How To Eat For $4 A Day
This is a pretty interesting concept. Leanne Brown - a Canadian food studies scholar - has come up with a recipe book that teaches you how to eat well on just $4 a day! What's great is that all of the ingredients can be found at your local grocer and the dishes are actually good! You can download the PDF file of the book here

Currently Reading: #GIRLBOSS

Thursday, August 7, 2014

I downloaded #GIRLBOSS to read on my daily commute. It was on the popular list on iTunes and looked like a fairly quick read. I'd like to think of myself as a #GIRLBOSS but after reading this book, I definitely have a long way to go before I reach Sophia's level of boss. In this book Sophia Amoruso - founder and CEO of Nasty Gal - talks all about her life before Nasty Gal and what life is like now that the company has become massive.

I really admire Sophia's work ethic and how she built Nasty Gal. What started out as an EBay shop is now a multi million dollar empire and every ounce of the company's integrity is still intact. #GIRLBOSS really gave me some great tips that I can apply to this blog and my life in general!

My favourite excerpt from the book:

“That’s the number one thing, perhaps even the only thing, you can absolutely count on. Regardless of what your dreams are, if you listen only to those around you, the chances of your dreams coming true are very small. The world loves to tell you how difficult things are, and the world’s not exaggerating. And that’s a real bummer. But, here’s the real sh*t: You can’t have it all, and nothing comes easy. You will make sacrifices and compromises, get let down and let other people down, fail and start over, break some hearts, take some names, and learn to pick up and continue when your own heart gets broken. But difficult doesn’t mean impossible, and out of the bajillions of things in this universe that you can’t control, what you can control is how hard you try, and if or when to pack it in.”

If you agreed with that paragraph - then you will definitely love the entire book. I give #GIRLBOSS five stars - a must read for every girl!

Vintage Ads

Tuesday, August 5, 2014

The other day I was browsing Pinterest and came across a really neat vintage Lilly Pulitzer ad. I decided to search for vintage ads from some of my other favourite brands, and to my surprise there were quite a few! It's really interesting to see how ads (and prices) have changed over time! Can you believe that a pair of Lilly Pulitzer pants were once only $25?!

I'd love to have some of these made into prints and hang them up on my new gallery wall! Take a look for yourself!

Here are your links for the road!
