Hey It's Okay!

Thursday, July 31, 2014

It's been a while since I've penned one of these posts - so here we go!

1. To ride around in circles on the bus to avoid waiting in the rain
2. To take a three hour nap when you only meant for it to be 20 minutes
3. To drink espresso shots like they're water
4. To get Uber to drive you 3 blocks
5. To spend weeks shopping around for the perfect planner
6. To decide that none of the planners you found were good enough and make your own
7. To make a small spelling error in a tweet
8. To purchase a fancy water bottle...then lose it at work
9. To pretend that YouTube is television
10. To have ice cream for dinner

Lilly Pulitzer New Arrivals

Wednesday, July 30, 2014

Lilly Pulitzer just released a handful of new arrivals for their Resort collection. While I'm quite fond of all the items in the new collection, I think it's the new "Under the Palms" print that is the star of the show. It's bright and fun yet also a touch more mature than the standard 'Lilly' print that we are used to. I really quite like it!

I'm also loving the solid sweaters and popovers. These are definitely great transition pieces that can take you through to Winter.  Overall this is a fantastic collection fit for an resort!
My favourites:

Weekend Links

Friday, July 25, 2014

Wow this week has been busy for me! Working at camp is definitely exhausting but also very, very rewarding. I definitely cherish my weekends more than before and try to make the most of my (short) time off!

Here are your links for the road!

Breakfast With Bevan: Taylor Swift // Teen Vogue
Whether you love or hate her - you can't deny that Taylor Swift gives a great interview. On this episode of Breakfast with Bevan, Taylor chats about her biggest fashion regret, friendships and her style icon (Audrey Hepburn all the way!)

I LOVE these photos by the women on the Harvard rugby team. Through this photo essay, they are hoping to inspire women to love their bodies and stop looking at themselves as purely physical objects. I love this because as a science major, I get to learn about all of the amazing things our bodes can do, and as a woman it pains me to see society only focus on the outside. This is definitely something all women should read!

City Toile (Parchment) Screen Printed
I quite excited about the new wallpaper line by Rifle Paper Co. I'm a huge fan of their stationery - so why not hang it on my walls? There are a handful of prints (including a pineapple print!!) and they're all perfect to liven up any space.

This is quite hilarious. Artist Liza Nelson perfectly captures what certain emojis would look like if they were real. I was laughing so incredibly hard while browsing her site. My favourite image (and most used emoji) is definitely the one pictured above.

Scallop Heels / J. CREW
Imagine the heart in eyes emoji....that is my face right now. I love EVERYTHING about these shoes and I need them in my life. How cute would they look paired with a white shift dress or dressy shorts and a flowy top. Swoon.

What are your weekend plans?

Quick Recipe: Cake Batter Truffles

Thursday, July 24, 2014

While browsing Pinterest, I came across the following image:

Cake Batter Truffles …& Food Processor Giveaway! | Fabulous Food Recipes

I'll give you a second to wipe your drool. Seriously though, how delicious do these look? I managed to track down an easy recipe that you can make at home. These would also make a fantastic birthday party snack or care package gift! No matter how you choose to serve them - these truffles will be a hit!

Recipe via: Deliciously Yum

5 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup flour
1 cup yellow cake mix
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 tablespoons rainbow sprinkles
8 ounces white chocolate
1 teaspoon shortening
nonpareils, for sprinkling

1. In a stand mixer, mix together the butter, sugar, flour, yellow cake mix, and vanilla. If the dough is not coming together well, use your fingers to form the dough. It should not be sticky or wet. Once the dough is formed, add rainbow sprinkles and work throughout the dough.

2. Form the dough into 24 1-inch balls and put into your freezer. The dough balls should remain in the freezer for about 30 minutes or until firm.
  1. 3. While the cake batter balls are chilling, add your almond bark and shortening to a microwave safe bowls. Heat until completely melted in 30 second intervals.
  2. 4. Remove the cake batter balls from the freezer and, using two forks, dunk each ball into the melted chocolate and set on a wax paper lined plate. Sprinkle with nonpareils and continue with remaining cake batter.

What a simple summer treat!

H&M Home

Wednesday, July 23, 2014

This is really exciting!! H&M has launched a home line! I have a number of H&M clothing items in my closet that I cherish - so when I heard about the home line, I was interested to see how the H&M aesthetic would be used for housewares. I love how chic and reasonably priced the items are. I love how H&M styled their items in the online ads because I almost always have trouble picturing how a certain item will look in a space.

If you're starting to shop for your dorm room or apartment, definitely check out this line for affordable accent pieces and bedding!

Whenever it gets super hot outside, I like to listen to music that is a bit slower. I'm not sure why, but it seems to take my mind off of the heat! I've been listening to a handful of songs on repeat during my commute so I decided to compile them into a playlist for you!

Happy Bastille Day!

Monday, July 14, 2014

The inner Francophile in me couldn't help but make a post about this!
It's Bastille day, which commemorates the beginning of the French Revolution with the storming of The Bastille (not to be confused with the band) in 1789 and the Fete de la Federation in 1790. It's also the perfect day to channel your inner

ah....chic, simple and that little, mmm, je ne sais quoi. perfection.

To celebrate try making this simple French recipe:

Souffle au Fromage:
Recipe via: Easy French Food

  • 4 large eggs, plus 1 large egg white
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 6 ounces cheese (about 2 cups shredded)
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • salt and pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  1. Separate the eggs. Begin by separating the eggs. Place the egg whites in a very clean metal mixing bowl, and the egg yolks in a small bowl. Allow the eggs to come to room temperature for about 20 minutes.
  2. Prep work. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Shred the cheese if necessary. In the microwave, melt a teaspoon of butter in a two quart souffle dish. Use a pastry brush to thoroughly coat the sides and bottom of the dish with melted butter.
  3. Make the bechamel. Melt the butter in a medium sized sauce pan on medium heat. When it is melted, stir in the flour with a wooden spoon. Cook, stirring frequently, for two minutes or until the mixture is foamy. Add the milk, slowly at first and stirring after each addition to keep lumps from forming. After you've added about half the milk, you can just pour in the rest.
  4. Add cheese, cool, and add egg yolks. Heat the sauce for several minutes until it is thickened and almost boiling. Lower the heat and stir in nutmeg and season to taste with salt and pepper. Stir in the cheese, adding a bit at a time and stirring until blended after each addition. Remove from heat and allow to cool for ten minutes. After ten minutes, mix in the egg yolks.
  5. Beat the egg whites. Using a hand mixer with whisk attachment, beat the egg whites with the cream of tartar until they are stiff and glossy.
  6. Fold in the egg whites. Blend 1/4 of the egg whites into the cheese sauce to lighten it for the folding process. Place the rest of the egg whites on top of the lightened sauce and use a rubber spatula to cut in the egg whites and fold over the sauce. Turn the pan a little and continue cutting, folding and turning until the egg whites are blended with the sauce. Don't over blend, about a minute should do it.
  7. Bake. Pour the batter into the prepared souffle dish and place the dish in the preheated (400°F - 200°C) oven. Bake for 30 minutes - no peeking. Remove from the oven and serve immediately.

Decorate Me: Indoor Terrariums

Thursday, July 10, 2014

Since I live in an apartment - having a garden is not an option for me. From time to time I will buy flowers for my apartment, but they don't really last that long. I've been looking for something that I can take care of and will add some greenery to my apartment. I came across these really cool terrariums that you can easily make yourself and that will persist indoors!

I'm thinking to make a bunch of small ones and a few larger ones to place in different spots!

My Summer Beauty Favourites

Wednesday, July 9, 2014

Summer is the perfect time to ease up on the makeup and try out some new products. Whenever it gets super hot, makeup tends to just melt off of my face and my hair becomes a frizzy mess. I definitely cut back on what I apply, but also experiment with some new stuff to see what helps with the melting and frizzing. Currently I have a handful of can't-live-without products..

Super City Block // I LOVE this stuff. It's basically a shield for your face minus the grease and smell that comes with a standard sunscreen. Highly recommend.

They're Real Mascara  // I've been wearing this mascara since it's release and I can't imagine life without it. One quick swipe of the want and your lashes look super long and full! I also like that it doesn't clump because those spider leg lashes are not a good look.

Baby Lips // This is a great drugstore find. Very affordable and keeps your lips soft. Also has SPF which is an added bonus - especially in the summer.

Essie Watermelon // I love this polish! It's a lot brighter than it photographs but still pretty.

Euphoria Rollerball Set // I've blogged about perfumes before - but I just wanted to add this set in because I love it so much. Definitely my signature scent and the rollerball is perfect to keep in your purse for touch ups!

They're Real Push Up Liner // This liner by Benefit is pretty new, but it's awesome! I got a sample at Sephora and I definitely will be buying the full size product. It's a gel liner that comes out of a precision tip. Super easy to apply and it's waterproof!

Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Conditioner //  I go through a lot of this stuff in the summer time. This conditioner keeps my curly hair hydrated which cuts back on frizz. It also smells great and doesn't weigh your hair down!

Lush Grease Lightning // This is my favourite Lush product. It's a tea tree cleansing gel that you don't have to wash off. It gets rid of grease really quickly, smells great, and makes your skin feel really refreshed. I highly recommend this product - especially for summer.

Clinique Neutral Palette // If I'm going to wear a little extra makeup, it will be from this palette. For some reason I tend to stick to neutral shades that have a little bit of shimmer! These eyeshadows last throughout the day and are easy to apply! A great palette for beginners!

What are your go-to summer beauty products?

10 Summer Dresses Under $100

Tuesday, July 8, 2014

One thing I love about summer is being able to wear fun dresses. Since winter in Canada lasts for about 6 months, I usually have to pair dresses with tights and cardigans; which is definitely not as fun as a flowy summer dress.

Since I only get to wear summer dresses for two months, I'd prefer to not spend a lot of money on them. Luckily there are some great affordable options that are still super chic!

Which dress is your favourite?

Lessons I Learned From Playing Tennis

Monday, July 7, 2014

I love tennis. It's a great sport which relies on skill, quick thinking and mental strength. I played tennis competitively in high school and now I enjoy the sport recreationally. I was watching a Wimbeldon match last week when something dawned on me...tennis is a great life teacher. Many lessons I've learned were in fact learned on the court.

1. Start with love
Many people do not love what they do and I think that is a shame. Finding something that you are passionate about in life will help you set and realize your goals immensely. When you love something - you will do anything it takes to keep it in your life but it will never feel like work. So start with love, and the rest will come.

2. Commit and follow through
In tennis this is really important. You have to commit to your serve, shot, tactic and always follow through with it. Last minute decisions can negatively affect your game. In the real world, same thing. If you make a commitment - don't back out last minute. Following through with commitments speaks volumes of your character. Consistency is key to a balanced life.

3. Focus on growth rather than success
This is the hardest lesson because success is a tricky concept. Some think it's earning a lot of money or becoming famous. When you focus on growth, you're in it for yourself. Growth means learning and practicing your skill to fulfill your own personal goals. Success focuses too much on outside achievements and neglects the path taken to get there. Every successful person in this world has put in work to get to where they are and comparison just brings you down. Focus on your goals and your why and you will always be content with your achievement (no matter their size).

4. Be resilient
Change is a fact of life and the more resilient you are the better. There is no direct path to your goals and you may encounter hard times. These times won't last forever and you will make it through. Keep your eye on the prize and get back in there. Nothing worth having comes easy!

5. Never ever give up.
If plan A doesn't work out, remember that you still have the letters B-Z. No matter what - never give up on yourself. Keep pushing, keep learning, keep trying. Persistence pays off and builds character. Let the failures of the fast fuel your growth.

I LOVE this initiative by Verizon. I live for science and we definitely need more women in STEM. The only way to do that is to encourage girls to pursue it.

Infused Water Recipes

Wednesday, July 2, 2014

Now that I'm working at camp all day, I need to make sure I'm always hydrated. I love water and I usually inhale it. From time to time though, I find myself craving juices and sodas. I've been reading about fruit infused waters and how they can give you an extra 'boost' throughout the day, cleanse your body and taste better than juice (wins all around!).

It's pretty easy to make your own fruit water! Just slice up the fruit in the guide below and add them to either a pitcher or bottle of water. You can add as little or as much fruit that you'd like; which will either give you a light or strong flavour.

Strawberries + kiwi + cucumber = digestion
Cucumber + lemon + mint = refresher
Orange + lemon + lime = immune boost
Raspberries + lemon + mint = refresher

How easy?

Which ones will you try?
